Starting in August of 1999 I had a series of seven surgical procedures on my right eye. Due to the vision distortion in that eye resulting from the surgeries, I now wear a 95% opaque black contact lens to block the vision in the bad eye. I actually see more clearly by using only the good eye. In August of 2002, I broke my left leg which took nearly a year to heal due to Paget's disease. During that period I was non-productive. Since then I've adjusted fairly well to the a problem judging distance with only on eye, dealing with arthritis, low back and hip deterioration with pain, but I continue to adjust and work regularly in the studio, although a bit slower.

Work pictured in this section my most recent work. For reasons mentioned above, and since I much prefer to decorate rather than throw, I have been buying bisque pots to decorate thrown by other potters. I don't dictate exact forms but suggest general shapes for them to throw for me. My challenge and joy is in the designing and executing imagery on pots. All pieces shown were glazed, sgraffito decorated and soluble salt stained by me, Kurt Wild. I sign and number each piece (on the bottom) with the date decoration was completed making the pot ready for firing. It's often some time later that a work is eventually fired.

Pieces with a number ending in G were thrown by Bill Gossman of New London, Minnesota; pieces with a number ending in B were thrown by Reg Behrends of Drummond, Wisconsin and pieces with a number ending in TF were thrown by Tim Frederich of Dublin, Ohio.

Kurt and Large Fuschia Pot

#041110PE "Fuchsia" , stoneware, 16-1/2" diam x 21-1/4" tall

As a late in life, one time thing, I wanted to work on a few very large pots so I had potter Phil Echert of Champlin, Minnesota throw six for me.
I began working on them one at a time and then firing each one before I would begin work on the next one. There were successes and failures. Work on the large pieces has been both frustrating and rewarding. One of the pieces I consider successful and pleased with was fired in November 2004. It is the Fuchsia decorated floor piece pictured above with me. The challenge of decorating and firing the last one of those large pots remains.
